Polyethylene furanoate (PEF) is a thermoplastic polyester that is biodegradable and semi-aromatic.

It has a high tensile strength, great heat resistance, and can be easily moulded and thermoformed. Polyethylene furanoate is a great replacement for PET, due to its superior qualities. Polyethylene furanoate reduces carbon footprint due to its efficiency.

To create PEF, 2,5-furan dicarboxylic acid (FDA) and mono ethylene glycol are polymerised. They form a feed slurry when feedstocks are introduced to the system. It is further moved to the reactor, where antimony gluconate acts as a catalyst and the esterification process takes place. After that, suction and heat are used to remove the excess water. Hence, PEF is formed.

China, South Korea, India, and the Netherlands are the leading exporters of PEF. On the other hand, the United States, Japan, Italy, and France are the top importers.

Key Details About the Polyethylene Furanoate Price Trend:

Procurement Resource does an in-depth analysis of the price trend to bring forth the monthly, quarterly, half-yearly, and yearly information on the polyethylene furanoate price, neopentyl glycol price and tetrabromobisphenol A price etc. in its latest pricing dashboard. The detailed assessment deeply explores the facts about the product, price change over the weeks, months, and years, key players, industrial uses, and drivers propelling the market and price trends.

Each price record is linked to an easy-to-use graphing device dated back to 2014, which offers a series of functionalities; customization of price currencies and units and downloading of price information as excel files that can be used offline.

The polyethylene furanoate price chart, pricing database, and analysis can prove valuable for procurement managers, directors, and decision-makers to build up their strongly backed-up strategic insights to attain progress and profitability in the business.

Industrial Uses Impacting Polyethylene Furanoate Price Trend:

Price Trend ImagePolyethylene furanoate is the perfect material for various applications since it has excellent thermal and barrier qualities. Alcoholic beverages, fruit juices, milk, soft drinks, fresh tea, and water all find their applications for PEF packaging.
Switching from PTA to bio-based FDCA to produce PEF can significantly reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and the use of non-renewable energy (NREU).

PEF is an intriguing alternative to PET for packaging applications such as bottles, films, and food trays since it has an innately more significant gas barrier for oxygen, carbon dioxide, and water vapour.

Key Market Players:

  • Avantium Technologies B.V.
  • Danone S.A.
  • Toyobo Co., Ltd.
  • Alpla

News and Events:

  • September 01, 2022: Within the framework of the European PEFerence project, the nova-Institute carried out a peer-reviewed Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) of Avantium’s PEF (polyethylene furanoate) applications. The study showed that making 250 ml and 500 ml bottles using 100% renewable carbon in PEF rather than fossil carbon in PET would result in considerable reductions in greenhouse gas (GIG) emissions. The first commercial FDCA facility in the world will open in 2024. The primary component of PEF is FDCA (2,5-furan dicarboxylic acid).
