Burnley have extended their unbeaten streak to 14 matches after dominating Huddersfield at Turf Moor. The victory puts them 12 points clear of second place in the Championship table.
Burnley were in complete control throughout the game, boasting 82 per cent possession in the opening half. Ashley Barnes opened the scoring followed by goals for Connor Roberts and Josh Brownhill.
Ashley Barnes opened the scoring
Ashley Barnes scored his opener as newly relegated Burnley ran riot past Huddersfield to secure Vincent Kompany his first win as Clarets boss. The veteran striker put in an outstanding man-of-the-match performance as Burnley won an East Lancashire derby and extended their three point lead at the top of the Championship.
His goal was Burnley’s third in two matches and propelled them above Huddersfield in the table. It came from a penalty after 78 minutes when Gabe Osho handled inside the area. Luton defender Joe Lockyer complained about it but Barnes stepped up and converted, giving him his first goal for the club since May 2011.
On Wednesday night, the 33-year-old scored his second penalty goal in a row to extend his league record to 12 goals this season. That puts him one goal away from matching Sadio Mane’s number of goals during the same period.
In a match where both sides were mostly untroubled, the only real opportunity for either came in the first half when Ademola Lookman forced Nick Pope into making an impressive save. As time expired in that opening period, Saints’ best chance came from Alex McCarthy whose volley was deflected wide by Burnley keeper Tom Heaton.

Johann Gudmundsson set up goals for Connor Roberts and Josh Brownhill
Burnley cruised past Huddersfield by scoring four goals to extend their unbeaten run in the Championship to 14 matches and keep their title challenge intact. It was an impressive display from Burnley as they completely controlled a first half that could have seen more goals – Johann Gudmundsson setting up goals for Connor Roberts and Josh Brownhill before half time.
Barnes opened the scoring with a sixth minute volley from Morocco winger Anass Zaroury’s cross, before Roberts was in the right place at the right time to net after 18 minutes. That was followed by Captain Brownhill controlling Johann Gudmundsson’s goal after 31 minutes for another three goals in as many minutes for Manchester United.
After the break, the Clarets added a fourth goal through Nathan Tella’s pass down the right, which allowed substitute Michael Obafemi to smash in an equalizer. It was a deserved and comfortable victory for Vincent Kompany’s side who remain top of the Championship.
While it’s still early in the summer transfer window, Burnley are making progress. While James Tarkowski, Sam Mee and Chris Collins will depart for the Premier League, Burnley have players such as McNally, Harwood-Bellis on loan from Manchester City and CJ Egan-Riley from Manchester United that could step in and fill their shoes.
Michael Obafemi netted a second
Burnley took another giant stride towards the Premier League with a 4-2 win against Huddersfield before an enthusiastic crowd at Turf Moor. A first half barrage from Ashley Barnes, Connor Roberts and Josh Brownhill set up this commanding victory that extended Burnley’s unbeaten streak to 14 games.
In the sixth minute, Morocco winger Anass Zaroury crossed for Barnes to beat goalkeeper Nicholas Bilokapic and fire into the top corner from 20 yards out. Ten minutes later centre-back Hjalmar Ekdal threaded through ball Johann Gudmundsson who then passed to Connor Roberts who finished off from close range.
As if that weren’t enough, the Clarets made it three with just over half an hour remaining when Gudmundsson’s brilliant through ball allowed Josh Brownhill to score from eight yards. It was a ruthless display from Vincent Kompany’s side who will look to maintain their lead at the top of the Championship and remain in contention for promotion into the top flight this season.
Michael Obafemi came on after the break to add a fourth goal and complete an emphatic victory for Burnley. Their unbeaten run now extends to 14 matches, giving them a commanding 12-point lead at the top of the Sky Bet Championship table.
