New National Education Policy

The New National Education Policy (NEP) was launched in India in 2020 to revolutionize the nation’s educational system. Some of the critical points of the NEP include the following:

  1. The introduction of a new 5+3+3+4 schooling structure replaces the previous 10+2 model. Five years of the first year of schooling will be dedicated to learning foundations, followed by three more years of preparatory school, middle teaching, and four additional years in secondary school.
  2. There is a particular emphasis on the native or the local language as the language of instruction until Grade 5 or more, with the possibility of continuing with the same language following that.
  3. The introduction of a standard entrance test for admission to universities will be administered through the National Testing Agency.
  4. Establishing An Academic Bank of Credit will let students accumulate credits earned at various organizations and then transfer these credits to institutions and courses.
  5. A step towards multidisciplinary learning, which includes the break-up of traditional barriers between various disciplines.
  6. Introduces vocational learning starting from Grade 6 onwards, including apprenticeships and internships being part of the school curriculum.
  7. The development of a National Education Technology Forum to assist in the use of technology in schools.
  8. The focus is on teacher training and professional development to ensure teachers hold at least four years of integrated B.Ed. Degree.
  9. A step towards lessening the focus on the rote and encouraging critical thinking and problem-solving abilities.
  10. Creating a brand new National Research Foundation to fund research across all fields.
